Six Run Ninth Inning Gives Baseball Big Walk-off Win
It was a game for the ages, proving once again that in baseball, you should never leave early. The Los Angeles Pierce College baseball team was trailing 6-1 going into the ninth inning of a crucial matchup against Santa Barbara. With the game on the line and the odds stacked against them, our players refused to give up.
Christian Santiago began the ninth with a single, then JJ Torrente reached first on an error, followed by Orion Hahm-Taklender being struck by a pitch. From there on, the line kept moving, Jeremiah Jones to bring a run in and move the runners from station to station. Pierce scored another run on a passed ball while Ethan Granillo walked to load the bases again. Johnathan Bogacz drew another walk with the bases loaded to cut the lead to one, and Dylan Simon reached on a fielder's choice to tie the game.
Santa Barbara only recorded one out in the ninth, Ethan Granillo then scored the game-winning run on a wild pitch to complete the ninth inning rally and give Pierce a 7-6 win. Despite the high scoreline, both teams had good outings from their starting pitchers. For the Brahmas, sophomore Justin Gottlieb pitched 6 1/3 innings and allowed only two runs while striking out six people. The Brahmas are now tied for second place in the conference with Santa Barbara and have two games remaining.
