Water Polo is a relatively new sport at Pierce College and started in the fall of 2015 thanks to former Head Coach Fred Shaw and Athletic Director Bob Lofrano. A women's sport was needed to remain compliant with Title 9 and water polo seemed a perfect fit. Our women's swimming and diving team had just won the conference championships a few years earlier and we were eager to add to our programs reputation. With the approval of our athletic director, Fred Shaw contacted Moriah VanNorman. Moriah was in the 2008 Beijing Olympics and earned a silver medal for team U.S.A. in water polo. Her first job was to begin recruiting. Even though the team she compiled was new to the conference, they became a force to be reckoned with. The team was comprised of young women from the area who were dominant in their positions. Sam Buliviac, Maggie Kurzeka, and Sara Booth led the team in and out of the water that first year. The team was fearless and worked diligently perfecting their craft. The players were hungry to prove what they could do in the water, and that determination led to lasting friendships outside the pool. The team had great leaders that would inspire the less experienced players on the team. During that season, the team went undefeated in conference and beat Ventura College to clench the title. What the team did that year was unheard of and a huge feat for a brand new team. The following year, the Brahmas had a terrific recruiting class and went on to go undefeated in conference play again only to lose in their final game. A few of the players went on to play at four year schools and remain close to this day.
Today Pierce College is continuing to build their women's aquatic program, and looking for strong water polo players and swimmers and divers from around Southern California. During these uncertain times it is a wise choice to complete your undergraduate degree at a community college. Here students can get an excellent education, discover their major of choice, and move on to a four year school. The Water Polo and Swimming & Diving Program here at Pierce College is known for their commitment to excellence in the classroom. Each year we have numerous scholar athletes. We pride ourselves on being students first and athletes second. We also have many athletes that have gone on to get scholarships at four year universities. We would like nothing more than to add you to our list of student athletes that have gone on to become doctors, lawyers, veterinarians, teachers, police officers, and more. If we can be of service to you and help you in your quest to find the perfect fit as a student and as an athlete, please do not hesitate to contact us. We would love nothing more than for you to become a Brahma and join us here at Pierce College.
